There’s been lots of movement toward alternative fuels in the construction equipment industry, but an often-overlooked technology is available here and now.
Earlier this year, Komatsu brought out its hybrid diesel-electric HB365LC-3 large excavator at its Demo Days in Cartersville, Georgia.
In the video above, we get a walkaround tour of the 82,000-pound hybrid excavator from Taimoor Kahn, Komatsu senior business development manager for sustainability.
We also get to see the model in action.
Benefits of the hybrid excavator include a 20% reduction in fuel costs and a 15% increase in productivity compared to a standard diesel model, Kahn says.
Despite the fuel savings, the HB365LC-3 gets a 70-horsepower boost from its engine-mounted generator that is powered by its capacitor.
Operators also get a faster, more responsive boom, arm and bucket swing and quicker cycle times with the electric swing motor.
It’s also quieter than a standard diesel excavator – and has lower emissions.
So to get a closer look at Komatsu’s hybrid HB365LC-3, check out the walkaround tour and demonstration of its abilities in our video above.
