Sitting between a mini and a full-size model comes New Holland Construction’s new line of “midi” excavators.
Though the name "midi" isn't new, the 7-metric-ton E70D and 9-metric-ton E90D mark a new class of excavator for New Holland and are also the first for New Holland from sister company Sampierana based in Italy. (New Holland parent company CNH bought Sampierana in 2021.)
“We are now producing our own excavators,” says New Holland Product Specialist Dan Kakareka, our guest on The Dirt.
Kakareka goes over the many new features on the models, including increased power and modern cabs. Dirt host and professional operator Bryan Furnace was impressed with the company’s customer research, which has resulted in lots of things operators will like about the new excavators.
“There are a lot of little things that stand out,” Kakareka says.

Bryan Furnace
Hi, everybody. Welcome back to Equipment World. You're watching The Dirt. I'm your host, Bryan. And today we're here to talk to New Holland about the new machines that they have just brought out to fill out their midsize excavator line. We're talking about the new E 70 and E 90. Yes, that's right, a seven ton and a nine-ton machine.
00:00:16:12 - 00:00:25:16
Bryan Furnace
New to their lineup here to talk with us today is Daniel.
00:00:25:18 - 00:00:32:14
Bryan Furnace
So can you give us a just high-level overview of the of the new E 70 and E 90 machines and what you're bringing to the table?
00:00:32:16 - 00:00:49:05
Dan Kakareka
Absolutely. So this is a new product line for the New Holland construction brand. We are introducing the the E 70 D and the E 90 D, which are our new mini excavators into the lineup. You know, this is two of three models that will be launched when we're all said and done in the mini product line, E 70.
00:00:49:05 - 00:01:20:06
Dan Kakareka
That's putting us in that seven metric ton class, but some real nice features in there. The cabs are really automotive style, style cabs, lots of technology in them. You're able to really hone down on attachments so you can select the attachments right through the monitor there to be able to customize it and set your flows and pressures right from the monitor serviceability on the products as well as fantastic nice wide open panels on the machines to be able to easily access a lot of the service components, the regular maintenance items that you need to get to, you're not working in tighter areas here.
00:01:20:06 - 00:01:35:13
Dan Kakareka
We try to keep it nice and wide open for that, mechanic to get in there and work on it if they need to. We jump up to that E90 machine. You know, this is going to be a real powerhouse for us. You know, that nine metric ton model is really growing industry and media and excavators in general.
00:01:35:13 - 00:01:46:23
Dan Kakareka
The industry is really growing fast on that that size of the size of excavator. So we're excited to to get into this market at this time. So I think it's, to be a real benefit for us and our customers.
00:01:47:00 - 00:02:05:12
Bryan Furnace
That mid class excavator is just a sweet spot. It's deceiving because you have the small footprint so you can get in backyards, you can get through gates for the most part pretty easy. But the amount of power and production you get out of those machines, they are deceiving little machines.
00:02:05:12 - 00:02:07:23
Bryan Furnace
Because I say little. They're not that little.
00:02:08:01 - 00:02:22:04
Dan Kakareka
No, they're not. You know, when you bounce up from that compact excavator up to that medium size machine, it's a substantial jump in both horsepower and performance overall. And I think you really get the benefits of of jumping up to that next size class there.
00:02:22:06 - 00:02:43:04
Bryan Furnace
Absolutely. It used to be, you know, when we had just mini excavators, the thought of digging a basement with a mini excavator was laughable. And I think still for the most part, mentally, you kind of laugh at the concept of digging a basement with a 7- or 8-ton machine, and it's not laughable. Those 8-ton machines get a ton of production, so I can only imagine what kind of production you're getting out of something like the E90.
00:02:43:04 - 00:02:44:21
Bryan Furnace
With that extra reach, it's going to be like.
00:02:44:23 - 00:03:00:16
Dan Kakareka
Well, not only the extra reach, but you know, you can get the option of a six-way blade on there to to be able to push that material. So I think that's going to come in handy as well. But there's some really nice features on that E90 machine that we're, we're liking. It is the age controlled machine.
00:03:00:18 - 00:03:26:11
Dan Kakareka
So that gives us a lot of, a lot of ability to customize things inside that machine itself. So as we mentioned about attachments, being able to select your attachments right from the monitor but customizing the joysticks as well on on that unit. So, you know, if you've got an operator who likes system control on his left joystick and this grapple control on his right joystick, that can all be customized to be able to swap those left and right, joysticks however you want to just from inside, inside the monitor.
00:03:26:11 - 00:03:50:13
Dan Kakareka
So very simple to do. Obviously simple things like pattern changers. If you've got guys who are used to running backhoes or excavators, you can swap those very easily as well. But everything is customizable on these 90s. Or have these in general. You know, if you have an operator who likes a little more arm breakout horse versus bucket breakout, of course, that can all be customized right through the monitor to be able to make that machine fit that operator style of running.
00:03:50:13 - 00:03:53:21
Dan Kakareka
But yeah, there's there's a ton of nice features we're really pumped about.
00:03:53:23 - 00:04:19:14
Bryan Furnace
Yeah, that is awesome. And and it sounds like I, I will say as a princess operator, I can't I can't attest to the mechanics side and the service ability, but it's a princess operator. I am loving that the OEMs are going more and more towards the automotive industry when they're looking for inspiration on cab design and ergonomics. It has gotten so much more comfortable in, and even the last 5 to 7 years running these newer machines over the old dogs in the, in the industry.
00:04:19:16 - 00:04:29:14
Bryan Furnace
So my next question for you is we're currently used to case New Holland machines being Sumitomo. Are these Sumitomo machines like like their predecessors?
00:04:29:16 - 00:04:45:19
Dan Kakareka
We are now currently producing our own mini excavators. The Case lineup will eventually be going away from from the Sumitomo lineup. New Holland has not had a mini excavator in a very long time, so tell you how it did not have the Sumitomo products and New Holland is going to be producing their own mini excavator out of Italy.
00:04:45:19 - 00:04:57:02
Dan Kakareka
So we're very excited about that. It's been a long time since we've, had our own mini excavator and excavator and we're, we're pumped to get this, so it's. Yeah, it's a great product.
00:04:57:04 - 00:05:23:00
Bryan Furnace
Yeah. Great. So my next question and I'm going to come at this as a true operator. Well, you know, I'm excited about the S70. It's going to fill a great gap. But as you know with us operators, bigger more powerful is always better. So looking at the current case offering of the 80, the eight-ton machine, what are some of the benefits and what is the E90 going to offer that's a little separate from the NX 80 that we're used to.
00:05:23:03 - 00:05:43:19
Dan Kakareka
The current mini excavator is it's been an excellent excavator for us. The Sumitomo product has not let anybody down. But like any product, any new product you come out with, you want to make improvements on it. So, this product is, is no different. You know, first thing you're going to notice is the power, you know, from the Sumitomo machine, you go from 53 horsepower to the power machine's going to be 73 horsepower.
00:05:44:00 - 00:05:46:22
Dan Kakareka
So that's a huge jump in. And just that alone, that.
00:05:46:22 - 00:05:47:21
Bryan Furnace
Is a huge jump.
00:05:47:21 - 00:06:07:03
Dan Kakareka
And and with that comes the bigger breakout forces here. Breakout for sure. Bucket breakout. Of course. All going to give you a lot more power in that machine. We mentioned the controls, and all the customization that allows. One thing you're going to get is another nice feature is joystick steering. You'll be able to swap the joystick steering, which not a lot of people have.
00:06:07:03 - 00:06:22:14
Dan Kakareka
I know Caterpillar has it out there, but we're going to be one of the unique OEMs out there that have that, feature on the machine. Excellent. That's going to allow you to operate the drive that that machine, just by operating the left joystick. So I think operators are really going to like that feature on the machine.
00:06:22:14 - 00:06:36:10
Bryan Furnace
For for operators who haven't been in one of the new Caterpillar excavators, that joystick steering is an absolute game changer when you're doing any sort of blade work. And the fact that you guys are offering a and make sure I heard you correctly, that's a six-way blade coming on this machine.
00:06:36:12 - 00:06:39:11
Dan Kakareka
That is correct. Six-way blade would be an option.
00:06:39:13 - 00:06:57:13
Bryan Furnace
So any any sort of blade work, that is where you know, I originally thought about that joystick steering. I'm like, okay, great. Now I don't have to have my feet on the travel pedals for the two minutes. I'm going to track across the jobsite. That's not where you appreciate the joystick steering. It's when you're cleaning up the the trench or you're trying to backfill something.
00:06:57:14 - 00:07:03:13
Bryan Furnace
You're doing a lot of blade work. Now you're able to just your hands. It is an absolute game changer.
00:07:03:15 - 00:07:20:14
Dan Kakareka
I couldn't agree more. That's where we're going to really see the benefit of that. Joysticks steering. Another really great feature that that we're launching is as a multiple production line on there as well. So there's going to be a dedicated Mulcher line, for any of those attachments that go on there that require the dedicated flow.
00:07:20:16 - 00:07:38:09
Dan Kakareka
So anytime you're doing those multiple movements, you're not going to be stealing your your flow away from your attachment there. You're going to have the dedicated power and assign flow going right to that attachment, so you don't have to worry about it. Keep doing multi functioning with that machine and not worry about pulling anything way. So that's going to be an option as well.
00:07:38:11 - 00:07:50:10
Bryan Furnace
So just so I understand that correctly, it's not just a dedicated hard line for a Mulcher. You're actually dedicating a pump to the flow to that line so that any other functions are not going to steal power away from that head.
00:07:50:12 - 00:07:51:14
Dan Kakareka
That is correct.
00:07:51:16 - 00:07:59:04
Bryan Furnace
Oh, fantastic. That's fantastic. I'm going to be honest, I'm quite excited to get some free time in this machine. This is this one's got me pretty excited.
00:07:59:06 - 00:08:13:04
Dan Kakareka
You and you and I both, you know, we put a lot of time and effort in the engineering teams just getting customer feedback over the years here. And I think you're going to see it. It's just a little things that we put into this machine that are really going to stand out. LED lights all around the machine.
00:08:13:04 - 00:08:30:06
Dan Kakareka
You know, when an operator walks up or gets out of the machine. No, we understand you're operating early mornings or late evenings. You've got a nice little outdoor dome light that turns on. So if it is dark outside, you can see where you're going. Visibility around the machine is excellent. You've got the rear-view camera that comes standard on the machine as well.
00:08:30:07 - 00:08:45:20
Dan Kakareka
The front roll-up door is really nice as well. So, you know, everyone always wants to know what to do with that lower portion of the of the window there. When you're raise your front window up, what we have on our door is you can store that front window in the upper part of the window. So when you raise that front window up, it stores above you.
00:08:45:20 - 00:09:02:08
Dan Kakareka
So you don't have to worry about pulling it out, storing it somewhere. Wow. So you've got those guys who are digging, digging, doing any kind of utility work that need to look down into the trench. They don't have to worry about dust or anything blocking their their visibility on that lower window. It's not going to be there stored right above you.
00:09:02:10 - 00:09:06:00
Dan Kakareka
So that's a nice little feature that, I think guys are really going to like.
00:09:06:02 - 00:09:32:17
Bryan Furnace
I love the fact when you say we've listened to customer feedback, this sounds like you legitimately listened to the operators, because all of these features that this is great. These are excellent modifications to the machine, and it's exciting to see OEMs truly changing up the machine in a beneficial way to the operator, as opposed to adding kind of an arbitrary feature that they can then use up as a bullet point down the road.
00:09:32:19 - 00:09:54:05
Dan Kakareka
Sure. I mean, you want to put it in practical applications that people are using on a regular basis. And, and I think these are just some of them that we added in there, some other nice features when it comes to serviceability, I think you're going to really find that this machine is easy to work on. With two bolts removed from the back of the cab, that cable tip over, you can get to all your major hydraulic components on that machine.
00:09:54:05 - 00:10:11:21
Dan Kakareka
And the other nice feature in that back up back panel by the fuel tank there is, you know, guys aren't always working in the most accessible locations. You know, sometimes you're working in areas where, you know, say for example, your fuel truck can't get to that area to be able to fuel that machine up. One nice feature we added to this as a fuel pump.
00:10:11:21 - 00:10:26:19
Dan Kakareka
On the back of that machine, you can always pull a five-gallon bucket of fuel. If you're in a remote area and bring that to the back of the machine. There's a hose that comes off the back side of the machine and drop it into that bucket. It's got a filter on it already. Turn it on and you can pump that fuel right into the fuel tank.
00:10:26:19 - 00:10:38:06
Dan Kakareka
Easily accessible. So nice little feature again that that just we've taken feedback from the customers and and heard about issues they've had previously and tried to come up with solutions for them.
00:10:38:08 - 00:10:46:16
Bryan Furnace
Yeah, that's fantastic. And and remind me again I don't think we've mentioned it. Are these zero tail swing machines or reduced tail swing machines.
00:10:46:18 - 00:11:06:12
Dan Kakareka
That's a great point. So you can get it in zero or reduce tail swing. So when you have the standard counterweight on it, it's a zero tail swing. And then when you get that additional counterweight down there, you get a little bit of that added weight on the back side. You get additional lifting performance. And what's nice about it, especially on the E90 when you get that heavy counterweight on the back, you're almost at a ten-ton machine on there.
00:11:06:12 - 00:11:13:00
Dan Kakareka
So you get the price point of a nine-ton machine with the performance of a 1010. So it's so nice feature though.
00:11:13:02 - 00:11:19:23
Bryan Furnace
Yeah, that's fantastic. Like I said I'm quite excited about these. Dan, thank you so much for the time and the overview of the new E17, E90.
00:11:20:00 - 00:11:22:22
Dan Kakareka
Bryan, great to be on and I appreciate your time as well.
00:11:23:00 - 00:11:34:03
Bryan Furnace
Well, thank you again for Daniel coming on the show to give us a quick breakdown of the new S70 and E90 midsize excavators from New Holland. As always, I hope this helps you in your business. Catch you on the next episode of The Dirt.
