Born from a customer service moment – pushing snow for 72 hours straight after his employer declined – Marine veteran Kevin Heilman has built All-Star Paving into a $20 million operation serving Indiana's competitive paving market.
Initially focused on driveways, the Seymour, Indiana-based company now targets competitive bid projects from $500,000 to $1 million. Led by Kevin and son Steven Heilman, All-Star Paving has diversified into road treatment, curb and gutter, and excavation work. The company was recognized as one of 12 finalists in Equipment World's 2024 Contractor of the Year awards.
“We’re in an extremely tough market here and in competition with some of the biggest companies in the state,” Kevin says. “But when you fight hard, it makes you better. Iron sharpens iron.”
“So out of high school I just came right in and jumped in,” says Steven about his decision to join the company. “I started out as the low man on the totem pole shoveling.” Steven now heads All-Star’s field operations.
Looking ahead, the 80-employee company is considering expanding beyond its current 9-acre site as it continues serving markets within 200 miles of its base in southern Indiana.
“We’re more of a family than we are a workforce,” says Kevin of his office and field crews. “I didn’t want to name the company after myself. So now we say we have a bunch of all stars around here. They’re way overachievers.”
